every time she closes her eyes, she's back there. it's the reason she startles as she awakens and sees ollie morales next to her bed. in those first, half-conscious moments when nightmares and reality blur together, her mind goes to team rocket first. she hears her own panicked gasp in her ears as she rouses, but it doesn't feel like it's coming from her. her brows furrow. emotions flicker across her face as consciousness returns to her, but none of them are pleasant or reminiscent of her. [break][break]
" — ollie," is all she can manage to draw out of a sleep-hoarse throat. beside her bed, a machine blinks as it reads her racing heartbeat.

a hand covers hers briefly as she reminisces on the fact that she was lucky.

[break][break] "hmm," he hums under his breath as he thinks about what she's asked. what hasn't happened since she'd disappeared? so many things, so many.

[break][break] he points to his ranger band, which is bright red, no longer gold.

[break][break] "i got promoted," he says, a bit sheepishly. "we were all sent to go investigate this ancient tomb. but i guess, i must have done well on the mission, 'cause dahlia goode promoted me shortly after."

[break][break] "though, i think penny or eva might've had something to do with it too."

[break][break] ollie leans forward, a hand affectionately reaching over to brush a strand of hair out of her eyes.

[break][break] "i'm glad you're okay, anna," he said softly. "i was really worried about you."

[break][break] his memory was still foggy from everything that he'd experienced in galar, but he remembered being overjoyed at the information that Greyson Connors provided them shortly after. the fact that they'd actually gotten intel on her, and that they'd been right.

[break][break] and it's a lot to process. she sits there quietly, digesting each piece of news spoonfed to her. ollie morales is head ranger now. he went to some ancient tomb — why? she wonders — and got promoted for that. or got promoted by some internal politics. [break][break]she wonders how much ollie knows about penny and matias and what they did to his sister, but the thought of bringing it up here and now is an exhausting prospect. she reaches for something easier: [break][break] "congrats."[break][break] and she means it, even though it sounds divorced from her brand of enthusiastic sincerity. [break][break] "how's the paperwork treating you?"[break][break] she ignores every screaming impulse to shy away from the hand reaching for her face. it's ollie, she thinks, he wouldn't hurt her. she pivots from his well wishes, unsure of how to address them.[break][break] "do you think you can flex your new title and get me out of here early?" [break][break]her voice is so flat that the question could be a request or a joke or somewhere in between.

hearing her laugh makes a relief dawn like sunlight onto a fresh glade, but at the same time, concern at the sharp inhale.

[break][break] 'she'll be back to normal in no time,' he tells himself because there's nothing else he could say.

[break][break] "i could," he says thoughtfully, brow furrowing. he knows that as a head ranger and also as her friend, he should have a better sense of responsibility. but there is that small, childish and pathetic part of him that wants nothing more than to see her smile again, just like before. wants to make her happy, to make up for the guilt the squirms in his chest.
